What You Actually Need to Replace
Your AquaTru holds three cartridges covering four filtration stages. Stages 1 and 2 sit in a single pre-filter/carbon cartridge that catches sediment and chlorine before the membrane. Stage 3 is the reverse osmosis membrane itself, which does the work the machine is bought for — removing dissolved metals, fluoride, nitrate and TDS. Stage 4 is a VOC carbon cartridge that polishes taste and, in the alkaline variant, adds minerals back.

Note the pre-filter interval: six months, not the twelve most coverage assumes for both carbon stages. And one line from the datasheet's arsenic section deserves emphasis: the RO membrane must be replaced on schedule specifically to maintain pentavalent arsenic reduction. If you're on arsenic-affected water, membrane replacement is a safety schedule, not a taste preference.
The "1-Year Combo Pack" contains one pre/carbon and one VOC cartridge and no membrane — which means that on the datasheet's six-month pre-filter schedule, the combo alone does not cover a full year. You'll need a second pre/carbon cartridge in the same year.

Two things worth doing the arithmetic on — using the datasheet's schedule, with its six-month pre-filter. First, the combo question changes: a full year à la carte is two pre/carbon cartridges plus one VOC, $99.85. The 1-Year Combo covers only one of those pre-filters, so the combo route costs $89.87 plus a second pre/carbon at $29.95 — $119.82. On AquaTru's own schedule, buying à la carte is now the cheaper path, not the combo. Second, the 2-Year Combo at $299.95 covers two years of everything including a membrane; the same coverage à la carte on the datasheet's schedule comes to roughly $259.65. The combo packs are convenience purchases, not savings.
Realistic annual running cost: about $100 in the years you replace only carbon, about $160 in the years the membrane comes due. Averaged, call it $130 a year. That is meaningfully higher than a tank-based under-sink RO system, where annual filter cost typically runs $50 to $90 — and it's the single most common complaint in AquaTru's Amazon reviews, which sit at 4.2 to 4.4 stars against 4.5 to 4.6 for the major under-sink brands.
The Descaling Question
AquaTru recommends periodic descaling to clear mineral scale from the tank and lines, and the search volume suggests plenty of owners go looking for the kit. AquaTru does not sell a descaling product through Amazon. It's a direct-purchase item from the manufacturer.
What AquaTru's descaling powder is, chemically, is food-grade citric acid — the same substance sold for descaling coffee machines, kettles and water distillers, typically for a fraction of the price. Owners on hard water who descale quarterly can buy a two-pound tub of distiller-grade citric acid for around $26 and get years out of it, or a multi-use coffee-machine descaling powder for around $10.
Two honest caveats before you substitute. AquaTru's own instructions specify a dosage and dwell time for their tank geometry; a generic powder gives you the chemistry but not the protocol, so follow AquaTru's stated dilution rather than the coffee-machine label. And if your unit is under warranty, check AquaTru's terms — some manufacturers reserve the right to decline claims where non-specified consumables were used. For most owners the substitution is straightforward; if you'd rather not think about it, buy the manufacturer kit direct.
How often: scale accumulation scales with your water hardness, not with a calendar. Softer municipal water may need descaling once or twice a year; hard-water households in the Southwest and upper Midwest will see visible scale far sooner. When to Replace Early
The stated intervals assume average municipal water. Three situations shorten them.
High sediment or high TDS input loads the pre-filter faster. If your feed water is above roughly 500 ppm TDS, expect the carbon stages to fatigue ahead of schedule. Heavy household use is the more common reason — the gallon ratings are gallons, not months, and a family of five hits 1,200 gallons considerably sooner than a couple does.
The third is the one people miss: extended non-use. A machine sitting unused for weeks with wet cartridges is a substrate for bacterial growth, not a paused clock. If you've been away for a month or more, flush thoroughly before drinking, and if it's been a season, replace the carbon stages regardless of gallons.
The taste test is not reliable for the stages that matter. Carbon stages announce their exhaustion through returning chlorine taste, which is genuinely useful feedback. The membrane does not — TDS creeps up long before anything tastes different.
